SUPER BREAK POP CREW!

So I am about a month and a half away from pitching my next big comic to publishers. I've been holding the title back in supreme secrecy for months now (online anyways. I think every friend I have around me is probably sick of hearing the title, personally). But here it is: "SUPER BREAK POP CREW" is the 2nd big comic coming out of the RUDY! stable of comics!

As with "Train Me, Gamble," I will be posting a 16 page preview here on rudysolis.com for you guys, my friends and fans. You will be able to read the comic before the big wigs, before anyone right here!

I'm very very excited about this new project. The art is by the inconquerable WILLIAM ALAN REYES and the letters are by the unbeatable KEL NUTTALL. If William is my right hand man, then Kel is definitely the left. Kel is wrapping up the letters as we speak, so the preview will be up and running here in the next week or two.

But just to give you a little info on this big project: "SUPER BREAK POP CREW" is about the world's greatest Breakdancing, Pop Star, Superheroes. There are five members to this all-star squad: SUPER ACTION OPTICAL, PANDA BONG BONG, BBOY FOREVER LIFE, GUMSHOE ROBO, and the cutest/toughest girl the world has ever seen- BOY DON'T CRY!

Our story follows the Super Break Pop Crew as they face their greatest challenge yet! What is this challenge you ask? Well, I guess you're going to have read Issue One to find out! Rest assured, this is comic is going to knock your socks off!

Now that I've hyped this damn thing up to the gills, I've got to be nice and show you at least Page One right? Okay, you've twisted my arm. Here it is folks, PAGE ONE OF SUPER BREAK POP CREW!!!! MORE TO COME!

Happy 2010! Oh 10, oh yea! Welcome to the new year everyone!

The holidays were very kind to me and busy. I have started a new shoot that takes me around the city and involves specific objects. So far I've completed 2 locations. I still have 5 more areas to shoot in. But thats all I can share with you on that. In the near future I will share the product of that shoot.

There is also a new project that will be starting soon. It involves human subjects...no I'm afraid it will not feature Jeremy Morgan, but he is a subject you will see again. My newest work in this shoot will involve a female. I've come up with some concepts and she and I are excited to see them come to fruition. I must apologize again, for that is all I can share on the matter...for now.

Lets get to the goods. The shot you see below is part of a series I did here in downtown San Francisco. The shoot itself was indeed skate photography. However I decided to take skating into the still life realm. The light on this day was fantastic! The sunset was cracking between buildings and bouncing everywhere. I was very fortunate to have it assist me the way it did.

The wonderful thing about this photograph was of course the woman on the left side of the frame. She just happened to be walking by and I did not intend for her to be in the shot. In fact I didn't notice her until I took the photo into editing. Her reaction makes the picture. This is the beautiful thing about photography. Often things like this will happen when you go out on shoots in the public. You can't predict what will come into the frame when you shoot and if it so happens to work out like it did in this shot then you may end up with one hell of a picture.

This shot along with the others in the series will go on sale in several different forms. I will have regular prints as well as large canvas prints. There will be more details on that in the coming months. For now I'd like to know what you think so please leave comments. Til next time..keep it 100. Peace.

So I wrote this really deep intellectual post about becoming 30. There I was, baring my soul on my site, talking all about growing up and what it is to be a young man standing on the brink of losing the word young and just being simply a "man."

And I deleted it. I felt like I lacked the proper verbage to explain what I meant. So I let it go. Perhaps another day.

Either way, it feels really good to get older. I enjoy it. Can I just say that? I often feel like Neo from the Matrix. The older I become, the easier it is to read between the lines.

Since that is about all I have to say, I thought I would give you some stuff to chew on. Ladies and Gentlemen:

Glorification of Destruction

My newest comic script is at the halfway point of being finished. Once I've made some major headway with the 3rd Issue my new artist will begin work on the 1st Issue. Wait till you've seen this new guy. Oh man... You've seen Santiago. You've seen William. But you've NEVER seen this new guy... I get pumped just thinking about what he's going to be bringing to the table!

This new comic is a mobster story. Which was no easy feat. Every type of gangster story has been told in my opinion, and told in every possible medium (movies, books, comics, TV). So where does one go? How does one present a new type of story about a bunch of gangsters doing a bunch of gangster shit?

Therein laid the challenge my friends. But I what I've come up with, what you're going to see, I can assure you has NEVER been done in a gangster story. NEVER. This is a first. I know that's a tall order. I know I may be sticking my neck out to hang, but I promise that you will love what you see...

One of the aspects I'm working with is the glorification of destruction. (And no, this is not the trump card I spoke of in the last paragraph. You're going to have to wait for inks and letters before you see what that's all about.) I wanted to write about the obsession some people have with mutilation of the lives around them, even their own. But I wanted to present it in the way they see it: charming, alluring, sexy, gross in a nice way. Some people gain a strong sense of bravado from recklessness. They feel a certain strength and confidence from acting out in ways that ruin the world around them. I wanted to explore that.

And so I am...

I found this online. The drawing is by an artist named Caleb McCall. I tried looking him up, but could find out very little about him. Maybe you know him? Either way, this drawing is in a small way a cryptic clue as to certain aspects of new comic. I promise it will make sense the second it drops. Ponder. Ponder. Ponder...

Surfing for stories in the ethersphere

This conversation comes from just one of the many books I am currently reading. "Promethea" is the story of a young woman named Sophie Bangs and her merging with Promethea, the living embodiment of imagination. The art is by one of the greatest living artists of our time, J.H. Williams. It is written Alan Moore.

I was thinking about this scene in particular in regards to writing. Stephen King is famous for constantly emphasizing the idea that stories aren't necessarily fabricated by the writer, more so they are plucked out of the ethersphere, with little control over what we see or why we see it. I agree with this notion a great deal.

Why do I write what I write? Where do my ideas come from?

No idea.

Oh sure, names and conversations I have end up in my books all the time. Places. Jokes. But the story? The characters, motivations and what drives them to make the decisions they do as they journey towards the end of their tale?

No idea.

Why does "Train Me, Gamble" star a giant, cowardly monster and a 10,000 year old fighter who doesn't look much older than a 6 year old boy? See above paragraph for the answer.

I often feel more like a channel for the story. Like there is a TV in my head that I turn on, surfing for stories in the ethersphere... Looking for what I am to document next. I take comfort and delight in the idea that the process of writing can feel as much a mystery to me as it may to an outside observer. There is a satisfaction I gain from walking down the path of immateria in my mind, seeing mysterious, beautiful, and ugly places in the universe of my imagination. Planest swirl. Characters bounce from one world to the next. Love is gained. Love is lost. Galaxies collide. Suns are born. Children laugh, men and women love. The good guys win. The bad guys sometimes do too. Defeat is dealt swiftly. Victories last forever on the final page...

G.I. Joe: The Review and... the Musical?

I had a really hard time watching the GI Joe movie. I mean REALLY hard time. I actually fell asleep during the entire "accelator suit" scene in Paris. When I awoke, I was disappointed that the movie was not over. That's how hard of a time I had. That's rough. Like 40 Hell's Angels with baseball bats vs 1 Grandma in a wheelchair rough.

Now I'm a big fan of GI Joe. I'm talking Orca big. I read the comics. I love the animated movie. I owned all the toys as a kid. GI Joe is one of the coolest franchises I've ever seen. Good stuff man. So you can imagine my disappointment when the credits rolled. The movie made me feel how Zartan must feel at a costume party: lost in a crowd where all my coolest attributes are being drowned by a sea of poorly constructed clones. It was bad. I'm talking Orca bad.

But while digging around on the tuber, I came across this recently filmed music video that was not only better than the movie, it also reminded me why I love GI JOE. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be highly entertained for the next 3 and half minutes:

Welcome to the Working Week.

So Monday is pretty much over. Day one of the new working week has closed and I'm very happy. Fleshed out a major chunk of the new comic I keep teasing you guys about. I cannot wait to unleash it on you guys. I really can't. As soon as pages 1-12 are lettered, I'll post them on here. Trust.

The Saturday event at Isotope with Geoff Johns was amazing. Once again James Sime, owner of Isotope, threw an amazing event. The entire staff was just awesome.

Geoff is a really nice guy. I asked him a bunch of questions on writing and he answered all of them. Really simple, insightful stuff. It was great.

That's pretty much it for today. I'm tired. Working week has made me sleepy... :)
