Bay to Breakers (B2B) Photography!
RAE!
Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 11:26AM Last Sunday was the 98th annual San Francisco footrace known as Bay to Breakers. Originally started in 1912 as a way to lift the city's spirits after the devastating 1906 quake. It is one of the longest & largest footraces in the world. Average participants range from 60k to 90k. San Francisco broke the Guiness record book by having a total of 110,000 participants in 1986! How cool is that? This race is all about community and health (seriously). I'm not sure how many of you actually know this but Breathe California is a big beneficiary to the Bay to Breakers race. BC is a local public health organization who's efforts are dedicated to the fight against lung disease and the promotion of cleaner air for everyone now and in the future. So everyone is encouraged to make a donation to that cause and to the 1500+ who help organize & produce the race for all of us to enjoy and partake in. Thanks to all of the volunteers and Breathe California!
However the B2B has also been labeled as the "drunk march". Cause well...it is also a race filled with tens of thousands who get dressed up in eloborate costumes, follow the actual racers and drink til they can march no more. Some of the most impressive costumes come from local artists who make their expected appearance and most other city street events. So show your support to those artists if you can spot them..think of it like a "Wheres Waldo" game. This race is definitely a spectacle and is considered the kick off of all the fun events that take place in the city during the Summer, such Carnaval which starts today in the Mission Distict.
So today I leave you with a photo I shot & edited of B2B. I'll bring more B2B photography to you this weekend and follow it up with my Carnaval footage next week. So leave your comments and stay tuned as I bring you the latest in my world. Happy Carnaval everyone!
